NORTHPORT | After a sluggish start, the Sipsey Valley Bears dominated in the second half and defeated Decatur Heritage Christian 48-28 on Friday night.
“It was a great game for us,” Sipsey Valley coach Antonio Ford said. “We played well on both sides of the ball. We still had a few mistakes typical for a young program, but the effort was there.”
The Bears struck first, with Garret Lewis scoring on a 41-yard pass from Landon Davis. Kody Ewing’s extra point attempt was good for a 7-0 lead.
“(Lewis) plays well every game,” Ford said, “He’s a great leader. He’s set to be one of the best players in the state of Alabama before he’s a senior.”
Lewis completed 7 of 9 passes for 154 yards.
Decatur Heritage answered with Lee Godwin throwing a 5-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Cambron. Stanley Higgins kicked the extra point to tie it at 7.
Sipsey Valley’s Torrian Riley returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.
It was back-and-forth scoring after that as Godwin and Cambron each had a rushing touchdown for the Eagles. Sipsey Valley’s Jerry Freeman scored on a 2-yard run, and the score was tied at 21 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Lewis gave the Bears the lead for good when he scored on a 1-yard run. Special teams delivered again for Sipsey Valley as Palmer Cabaniss returned a blocked punt 32 yards for a touchdown.
After Freeman scored on a 30-yard run, Jarvis Blair recovered a fumble on a kickoff, setting up LaQuinton McKinstry’s 1-yard touchdown run.
“Our defense played with a chip on their shoulders tonight,” said Ford, whose team improved to 2-7. “It was a lot of our second-string guys out there. They stepped it up.
Decatur Heritage put the final points on the board with a 21-yard run by Godwin.
Sipsey Valley will play its final regular-season game at Maplesville next Friday.
