TUSCALOOSA | Earlier in the week, the Northridge High softball team was unable to take advantage of scoring opportunities. On Thursday, it was a different story.
Northridge’s Sami Story led off the game with a double to left field for the Jaguars. Madison Frazer reached on a bunt that sent Story to third base. Story then scored on a passed ball and Northridge secured a 1-0 win over Hillcrest in a Class 6A, Area 9 game.
"We took advantage of their mistakes," Northridge coach Denton Bowling said. "They’re a well-coached ball team. Coach Swinney has done one heck of job with them. In order to get to where we’ve gotten, we’ve had to put ourselves on their level because they are a good team. We capitalized early and we were fortunate enough to be able to hold them off."
Mickenzie Sparks (18-7) took the win, pitching a complete game with three strikeouts, one walk, one hit batter and three hits allowed.
Sparks retired the first nine batters she faced.
"As I’ve said, day-in and day-out all year long, we’ve got to do the little things right and today we had a great pitching performance, a great catching performance and our defense backed our pitcher up and we were able to walk away with a win," Bowling said.
Anna Blake Barnette reached twice for Hillcrest with a walk and a single. Bree Fornis reached on a bunt and Caitlyn Freeman had a single. Allison Freeman (16-6) took the loss and had 11 strikeouts with one run allowed on four hits in six innings pitched.
Northridge (36-14, 5-1) and Hillcrest (38-8, 5-1) both play today in the Hoover Invitational. Northridge plays Hoover and Wetumpka at at 3:30 p.m. Hillcrest plays Alexandria at 5 p.m.
