MONTGOMERY | The Northridge High School Jaguars got off to a promising start Saturday in the Champions Challenge but couldn’t sustain the momentum.
McGill-Toolen, ranked No. 4 in the preseason Class 6A poll, struck for three touchdowns in the first half and defeated the Jaguars 27-0 at Cramton Bowl.
The Yellow Jackets had 216 total yards at halftime, compared to 136 for the Jaguars. Northridge was hit with four personal-foul penalties, resulting in a loss of 51 yards and the ejection of linebacker Chris Terry. The Jaguars, ranked No. 9, committed two turnovers as McGill-Toolen’s Philbert Martial and Elbert Robinson each intercepted a pass.
McGill-Toolen had a total of 339 yards in total offense. Northridge had 226.
Northridge’s Bo Scarbrough, a junior running back who missed the last three games of the 2011 season with a knee injury, accounted for 102 yards by halftime. He rushed for 98 yards on 10 carries and caught one pass for 4 yards.
Northridge received the opening kickoff, and Scarbrough dashed 50 yards on the first play from scrimmage. Northridge had a first down at the McGill-Toolen 10, but the threat ended with a missed field goal.
Northridge started its second drive from the 14 after a fumble recovery by Bruce Brown. Martial came up with his interception on the next play.
McGill-Toolen got its first touchdown on a 74-yard dash by Ito Smith with 2:37 left in the first quarter. Thomas Hamlin kicked the extra point after the Yellow Jackets were penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Quarterback Jason Smith, an Auburn commitment, threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Carl Lee in the second quarter. Jeffrey Stanley’s 6-yard touchdown run capped off a 77-yard drive in four plays with 3:07 left before halftime, and Hamlin’s extra point gave the Yellow Jackets a 21-0 lead.
McGill-Toolen drove 70 yards in six plays for its final touchdown. Spencer Ruggs scored on an 8-yard run with 7:37 left.
Smith, who didn’t play in the second half, completed 3 of 4 passes for 60 yards and was sacked three times. Tanner Cline, Northridge’s starting quarterback, completed 5 of 15 passes for 40 yards. Cline’s longest pass went for 24 yards to wide receiver Cyontai Lewis.
