GORDO | Gordo High School quarterback Lane Moss led the Greenwave with three passing touchdowns and one rushing score as Gordo beat Aliceville 38-21 on Thursday night.
The game opened up for Gordo in the second half after taking a 15-14 deficit into halftime.
"He came on a little more for us in the second half," Gordo head coach David McKinney said. "We let Moss throw it."
The Greenwave was able to exploit a weakness it found in the Yellow Jackets’ defense.
"We watched film and knew we could go deep on them," Moss said.
McKinney added, "We were running vertical routes on them."
Moss had success with the deep ball in the second half as he hit wide receiver Drew Hankins for a 45-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Moss also found Malcolm Storey for a 16-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
Moss added a 1-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter that gave Gordo a 14-7 lead with 2:22 seconds left before halftime. Daylon Rice and Jamarcus Martina also contributed rushing touchdowns for Gordo.
Aliceville relied on Jeremy McMullen to fuel the offense. McMullen used a physical style of running to keep drives going and scored the two-point conversion that gave the Yellow Jackets a one-point lead at halftime.
"I was very pleased," Aliceville head coach Charles Moody Jr., said. "We have to get better blocking for him so he’ll have better creases."
McMullen did not anticipate having as much success as he had.
"I just used my blocking when I had it and pounded it in," McMullen said. "We played a tough opponent. They had me off of my ground a little bit."
McMullen still found a way to be successful, by using brute force.
"Running folks over, using my power," McMullen said. "I was using my leg power, I’ve been in the weight room a lot."
Aliceville also had a strong performance from quarterback Jocarrious Spruill, who had two passing touchdowns in the first half and one more in the fourth quarter. Spruill scored the game’s first touchdown by finding Christopher Crowell with 1:31 left in the first quarter on a 5-yard pass. Spruill found Crowell for a touchdown again on a 16-yard pass in the fourth quarter.
Cody Davis was on the receiving end of Spruill’s pass that tied the game with 52 seconds left in the first half before taking the lead with a successful two-point conversion.
Gordo (1-0) will host Sipsey Valley next week in its first region game of the year. Aliceville (0-1) will return home after the roadtrip to face Hale County.
