SULLIGENT | The Sulligent Blue Devils lost their season opener at home to the Hamilton Aggies, 27-7, Thursday night despite a strong rushing performance by Deion Jenkins.
Jenkins rushed 12 times for 124 yards and scored the Blue Devils’ only touchdown with an 8-yard run in a game where Sulligent was plagued by turnovers. The Blue Devils threw two interceptions and lost four fumbles in the loss. Hamilton fumbled twice but only lost one.
Sulligent (0-1) outgained Hamilton (1-0) on the ground despite carrying the ball less times. The Blue Devils rushed 30 times for 227 yards while the Aggies had 45 carries for 183 yards. The Blue Devils were less successful in the air, completing only 4 of 16 attempts for 61 yards in addition to the two interceptions.
The Aggies scored twice on passes of 24 and 56 yards from Mitch Stults to Jesse Box. Garrett May also scored on runs of 2 and 4 yards. They converted on all three of their extra points, but the run failed when they attempted to go for two after their first touchdown.
Sulligent will try to rebound next week when it travels to Cold Springs for its second game of the season.
