AREA ROUNDUP: Simon has four TDs in win over Fayette County


REFORM | Devonte Simon rushed for two touchdowns, passed for a touchdown and returned a kickoff 84 yards for another score as the Pickens County Tornadoes held off the Fayette County Tigers 40-31 on Friday night.

Simon scored on runs of 1 and 63 yards. He threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Rhaheem Curry. Jamarcus Brown had a 1-yard scoring run for the Tornadoes, and Curry returned an interception 49 yards for a touchdown.

The Tornadoes led 26-10 heading into the fourth quarter and had to withstand a late rally by the Tigers.

Fayette County quarterback Marcellus Redmond threw two scoring passes and rushed for two touchdowns. Tevin Madison caught both touchdowns from Redmond and finished with eight receptions for 184 yards. The Tiger defense also had two safeties.

Pickens County (1-0) hosts South Lamar next Friday night, while Fayette County (0-1) hosts Greensboro.

 

Greensboro 44, Bibb County 40

GREENSBORO| Tyrez McCain caught a 66-yard pass from Quante Brown with 2:31 to play to complete the Greensboro Raiders’ rally over Bibb County in a high-scoring shootout.

Bibb County led most of the game, but Greensboro scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to squeak by the Choctaws.

The Raiders were led by JeVontey Smith, who finished with nine carries for 69 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a 79-yard touchdown pass. Jamarcus Singleton added 74 yards on four carries as the Raiders used multiple quarterbacks. Brown completed 6 of 7 passes for 98 yards, while Jessmon Wiggins completed 3 of 4 for 84 yards and a touchdown. Kiemondre Turner returned a kickoff 75 yards for a score.

TJ Lockett led Bibb County with 287 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Adam Gaddis rushed for 174 yards and three touchdowns and returned a kickoff 83 yards for a score.

Greensboro (1-0) travels to Fayette County next Friday, while Bibb County (0-1) travels to Carbon Hill.

 

Lamar County 34, South Lamar 0

MILLPORT | The Lamar County Bulldogs piled up 282 yards rushing as they shut out South Lamar.

Alex Wheeler led the Bulldogs with 76 yards rushing and one touchdown.

Tim Harton, Dallas Cockerham, Kendal Smith and Cullen Carter each scored a touchdown for the Bulldogs.

Lamar County (1-0) travels to Oakman next Friday night, while South Lamar (0-1) travels to Pickens County.

 

Calera 33, Holt 6

CALERA | The Calera Eagles held a 20-0 lead at the end of the third quarter and coasted to a season-opening victory over the Holt Ironmen.

LaDarrias Phillips scored Holt’s lone touchdown on an 18-yard pass from Zuriel Kirkwood in the fourth quarter.

Holt (0-1) hosts Northside next Friday night.

 

Hubbertville 38, Phillips 18

BEAR CREEK | The Hubbertville Lions rode a 22-point first quarter en route to an easy victory over Phillips in their season opener.

The Lions’ lead dwindled to just 10 points by halftime, but they recovered to score 13 unanswered points. Phillips scored its final touchdown on the game’s last play after Hubbertville’s starters had been pulled.

The Lions (1-0) host Parrish next Friday.

 

Marengo Academy 57, Eastwood Christian 0

LINDEN | Marengo Academy demolished visiting Eastwood Christian, holding the Warriors to just 29 yards of offense and forcing three turnovers and a safety while gaining 285 yards on the ground.

The Longhorns were led by Josh Holifield, who gained 85 yards on six carries and scored one touchdown. Brant Lewis and Hayden Huckabee added 43 and 45 yards rushing, respectively. Huckabee had a 46-yard touchdown run.

Defensively, Kyle Adams led Marengo Academy with nine tackles and three assists.

The Longhorns (2-0) travel to Jackson Academy next Friday.

 

Marion County 57, Hackleburg 21

GUIN | Quarterback Sean Wallace rushed for three touchdowns and threw another for the Marion County Red Raiders.

Ready Swanigan rushed for a Red Raider touchdown and returned a kickoff 84 yards for another score.

Marion County (1-0) hosts Berry next Friday night. 

 

Pickens Academy 39, Sumter Academy 7

SUMTER | Josh Lewis led the Pickens Academy Pirates with 170 yards rushing on 12 carries for five touchdowns in a win over Sumter Academy.

Lewis scored on runs of 43, 66, 15, 5 and 31 yards. Garrett Estes scored the final touchdown for the Pirates on a 12-yard run. Estes had 85 rushing yards.

Christopher Yonker led Sumter Academy with 119 yards on 12 carries with one touchdown.

Pickens Academy (2-0) plays at Southern Academy next Friday. Sumter Academy (1-1) plays at Sparta Academy.

 

Vincent 28, West Blocton 19

WEST BLOCTON | Vincent had 251 rushing yards with Damauntey Johnson going for 118 yards with one touchdown and Rodney Groce running for 116 yards with a score.

Johnson also threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Anterio Rogers to open the scoring for Vincent (1-0). Kevin Greene accounted for an 85-yard punt return for a score.

West Blocton’s Evan Vick rushed for 103 yards on seven carries with two touchdowns.

West Blocton (1-0) hosts Corner next week.

 

Waterloo 45, Holy Spirit 28

WATERLOO | Holy Spirit’s Michael Al-Dijilia accounted for 72 rushing yards and a 12-yard receiving touchdown.

Defensively, Al-Dijilia had an 80-yard interception return for a score just before halftime.

The Titans led 28-21 at halftime before being shut out in the second half. Garrett Anderson and Derrick Garnett each scored on 3-yard runs in the first quarter. William Winters had 13 tackles and 10 assists on defense with two tackles for loss.

Holy Spirit (0-1) plays at Ellwood on Thursday at 7 p.m. in a Class 1A, Region 3 game.

 

Linden 39, Leroy 13

LEROY | Anthony Robinson led the rushing attack for Linden with 117 yards and two touchdowns to lead Linden past Leroy.

Robinson scored on runs of 30 and 37 yards. Jamal Lewis had 57 yards on six carries with one touchdown.

Marquis Shelton scored on two runs of 2 yards each. He finished with 47 yards.

Linden (1-0) plays at J.U. Blacksher on Friday.

 

Tuscaloosa Christian 34, South Haven 24

COTTONDALE | Tuscaloosa Christian jumped out to an early lead and was able to hold on against South Haven in eight-man football.

The Warriors (2-1) were led by Freedom Woods’s 201 yards rushing on 22 carries with a touchdown. Quarterback Jordan Potter completed 6-of-11 passes for 87 yards and gained 33 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns.

 

Cornerstone Academy 17, Southern Academy 14

GREENSBORO | Southern Academy scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, but an 85-yard kickoff return by Adrian Young with 3:00 left to play ruined the Cougars’ rally.

Southern Academy was led by Jacob Rose, who gained 106 yards on 23 carries. Matt Brady scored on a 1-yard run and Cole Marsh had a 35-yard touchdown reception from Clayton Hall during the rally.

Cornerstone Academy was led by Young, who finished with 15 carries for 88 yards,

The Cougars (1-1) host Pickens Academy next Friday.

 

Akron 56, Greene County 14

AKRON | Ledarius Hayes threw for three touchdowns and 164 yards in leading Akron over Greene County.

Quinxarious Jeffries had two of those touchdown receptions and scored two more times on interceptions. Derion Jack scored one touchdown and had 25 yards rushing.

Akron’s defense was led by Keontay Lewis with eight tackles.
