HOLT | A.J. Travis rushed for 185 yards and four touchdowns leading his Northside Rams to a 52-22 victory over the Holt Ironmen at Woody Clements Stadium on Friday night.
Travis scored on runs of 16, 12, 11 and 25 yards in the first half.
“I give (my offensive line) a lot of credit. They worked their butts off in the summer,” Travis said. “The heart that they showed to block for me and all the other backs amazes me.”
Holt (0-2, 0-1 in Class 3A, Region 3) took and early 8-0 lead on a 64-yard touchdown rush by D.J. Matthews. The Ironmen regained the lead twice in the first half. A 10-yard rush by quarterback Zuriel Kirkwood gave them a 14-12 lead, and a 50-yard pass from Kirkwood to Marcell Kirkland gave them a 22-18 lead.
The Rams (2-0, 1-0) then took over with a touchdown run by Travis and a 1-yard sneak for a touchdown by Justin Beck to take 33-22 halftime lead.
“The biggest adjustment we made defensively was we made sure we had someone on the edge to take away the sweep, they have so much speed to get out in space and we made sure we cut them off,” Northside coach Chris Hilliker said. “Offensively we just did what we do. We ran the football and got down there and blocked.”
Beck ran in his second touchdown of the game and Zarrian Grant added a 27-yard rush for a score. The scoring was capped off by a 20-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Aaron Appling.
“Coach said to go out there and play like we did last week against our rivals (in a 47-32 defeat of Berry),” Travis said. “Be strong, fight to the finish and win the game.”
Next week, Northside plays on the road at region foe American Christian Academy. Holt will travel to Greene County.
