VOLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Lady Patriots sweep Bessemer City


BESSEMER | The Hillcrest High School volleyball team swept Bessemer City in a Class 6A, Area 9 volleyball match Thursday.

Hillcrest won by scores of 25-10, 25-8 and 25-9 to improve to 6-5 overall, 1-1 in the area.

Elaine Shelton had 17 kills, three digs, two aces and two blocks for the Lady Patriots. Baylee House had 13 digs. Lyndsey Vaughan finished with nine digs, five kills, four aces and one assist. Rachel Luiz had nine assists, five digs, four kills and four aces.

Hillcrest plays at home Monday, facing Brookwood and Hueytown.

Sipsey Valley beats Greensboro, 3-0

BUHL | Sipsey Valley defeated Greensboro 25-15, 25-14, 25-15 in a Class 3A, Area 6, matchup.

Storm Stevenson had four aces, seven kills and seven digs, Kristen Sullivan had three aces, six kills, a dig and a block, Millie Sartain had an ace, 20 assists, a kill and a dig, and Amber Hassle had three aces, three kills, a dig, and a block.

Sipsey VAlley (7-4, 2-0) will travel to American Christian Academy on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Cagle leads Brookwood past Central

BROOKWOOD | Kalie Cagle had 27 assists, seven aces, two digs, one kill and one block as Brookwood swept Central 25-20, 25-21, 25-13, to earn a Class 5A, Area 7 win.

The biggest threat to a Brookwood win came in the second game, with Brookwood down 18-9. However, the Lady Panthers rallied to win the game.

Also for Brookwood, Caitlin Headrick had 10 kills, nine digs and one ace, Amanda Medders had eight kills and one dig, and Bethany Williams had eight kills, one dig, one ace and one block.

For Central, Angelica Weatherspoon had 11 assists, Alexis Reed had eight kills and three blocks, Crystalyn Bouyer had five kills, five aces and eight digs, and Brekell May had 10 digs and three aces.

Brookwood improves to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in area play. Central (7-9, 1-2) will next compete in Jemison Invitational on Saturday at Jemison.

Guarisco leads Northridge to victory

TUSCALOOSA | Amanda Guarisco had 13 kills as Northridge defeated Tuscaloosa County 14-25, 25-9, 25-15, 25-16 to earn another win in Class 6A, Area 9 play.

Also for Northridge, Anna Lee Petitt had seven kills and three blocks, Shirlyncia Moore had six kills and three blocks, D’Aja Patrick had three blocks and Kiana Johnson had seven aces and 38 assists.

For Tuscaloosa County, Alex Smith had eight kills, six digs and three aces, Savannah Helus had four blocks and four kills, Katie Lightfoot had seven digs and two aces and Laren Jenkon had eight assists and one block.

Northridge (15-9, 4-0) will play at Oak Mountain on Tuesday. County (3-11) plays at Hillcrest on Tuesday.

Lady Knights fall to Morgan Academy

TUSCALOOSA | Brittany Ledbetter had 14 digs, seven aces and five assists, but Tuscaloosa Academy fell to Morgan Academy 25-22, 25-22, 25-14.

Chassiti Kimbrell had six kills, three digs and an ace, and Shelby Curry added 12 digs, three kills and an assist.

Tuscaloosa Academy will next play next in a tri-match Saturday with Bessemer Academy and Pickens Academy at Bessemer Academy.

Akron beats Linden in area match

AKRON | LovPrincess Harris had 11 kills and 11 aces to lead Akron to a win over Class 1A, Area 4 opponent Linden by a score of 25-17, 25-13, 23-25, 25-19.

For Akron, Zabrina Small had 11 kills, Dequandra Lyles had seven kills and a pair of aces and Jasmine White had 21 assists.

Akron (9-4, 2-0 ) will host Keith on Sept. 25 at 5 p.m.

South Lamar tops Fayette County

FAYETTE | Karoline Holsonback had 15 kills and 19 digs to lead South Lamar to a win over Fayette County by a score of 25-9, 25-12, 22-25, 25-13.

For South Lamar, Lauren Crimm had 25 assists and Abbi Dollar had seven aces and nine kills.

South Lamar (10-3) will play a tri-match at Berry against Berry and Brilliant on Sept. 24 at 4 p.m.
