Tuscaloosa County's defense rises to occasion against Minor

BIRMINGHAM | Lucas Webb scored twice on interception returns to help lead Tuscaloosa County to a 35-13 win at Minor.

With the Wildcats leading 7-0 after a first-quarter touchdown on an 18-yard pass play from Tyler Gates to Allen Cooks, Webb made his first big scoring play in the second quarter with less than six minutes to go when he intercepted a Minor pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown.

With 4:19 remaining in that same quarter, Webb grabbed the ball again, this time on a 27-yard interception scoring play.

Tuscaloosa County’s Tylan Perry ended the game with 110 offensive yards, carrying the ball 18 times for 78 yards and catching two passes for 32 yards. Perry scored on a 19-yard run in the third quarter.

John Michael Clark scored later in the third quarter on a 1-yard run.

Tuscaloosa County’s Deramie Prince had four receptions for 64 yards. Jamarion Sanders was among the defensive leaders with two interceptions.

Minor, which trailed 21-7 at the half, scored on a 85-yard pass play in the third quarter and a fourth-quarter blocked punt return.

Tuscaloosa County (6-1, 5-0) hosts Hillcrest next Friday.

Minor (2-5) was only able to muster 65 yards rushing and turned the ball over four times.

“The front seven guys play their gaps well and the safeties run the alley well,” Tigers coach Randy Cook said. “When you turn it over as many times as we did against that kind of defense, it makes things tough."

The Wildcats defense again stood tall to thwart a late second-quarter drive, when Sanders grabbed an interception in the Tuscaloosa County end zone to keep the deficit at two touchdowns right before intermission.

“We had a chance there when it was 21-7 and just didn’t (make the most of those chances),” Cook said.

Joecephius Smith took a fourth-quarter blocked punt back 33 yards for a touchdown for the final score of the night.

Griggs led Minor with 156 total yards of offense, and Ladarious Waldrop added an interception for the Tigers.
