GREENSBORO | Greensboro capitalized on two early turnovers in the first quarter to give the Raiders a 14-point lead, but Gordo’s offense came up with several big plays in the third quarter to get the 28-20 victory on Friday night.
Marcus Jones intercepted a pass to seal the game for Gordo late in the fourth quarter. Greensboro had six turnovers, while Gordo had four, giving the Greenwave the slight edge in turnover margin.
“We just kept our composure, coach told us it was gonna’ be like this,” Jones said.
Gordo also came up big in special teams, recovering two onside kicks, which led to great field position.
Gordo caoch David McKinney said his team kept self destructing early in the game.
“Our coaches prepared our players this week before we came down here and we never lost our composure and came out with a victory,” McKinney said.
Gordo had 361 total yards of offense with help from quarterback Lane Moss and running back Tyvon Martin. Moss completed 13 passes for 158 yards. Martin had 41 yards rushing with two touchdowns.
“We knew we had to make plays for the team and get a victory. I had to bring my anger out on the field and make plays,” Martin said.
Greensboro quarterback Quante Brown threw for 152 yards on 11 completions. Brown also threw a 52 yard pass to Jevontey Smith for a touchdown. Greensboro’s early lead wasn’t enough to stop Gordo.
Greensboro coach Curtis said he thought his players played fairly well, but his team let Gordo have too many big plays.
“In life, you have those same type of situations, and you are gonna have a lot of letdowns, but you just have to bounce back swinging hard and never give up on yourself,” Graves said.
Gordo (6-2) hosts Holt next week and Greensboro (4-4) will travel to Greene County.
