LINDEN | Marengo Academy jumped on Southern Academy early and never let up en route to a 35-8 win Thursday night in AISA football action.
Josh Holifield returned a kick 79 yards on the first play of the game and gave Marengo Academy a lead it never lost.
The Longhorns (6-4) found the end zone again with 6:19 to go in the first quarter when freshman running back Hayden Huckabee scored the first of his three touchdowns on the night, sprinting 37 yards to put MA up by two scores.
In the second quarter, Tyler Barkley darted 26 yards to extend the MA lead again. Huckabee later punched it in from 3 yards out to cap an 11-play, 73-yard drive and put MA up 28-0.
Huckabee capped the MA scoring on a fake punt when he sprinted 38 yards for a touchdown.
Southern Academy (2-8) managed to get on the board with 3:01 to go in the contest when Dylan Henry snagged a 28-yard Clayton Hall pass for a touchdown.
Cole Marsh added the two-point conversion.
"I thought our guys played hard like they have done all year," Marengo coach Robby James said. "Southern has been down a little bit, but they always play good ball. They’ve been good for years and years but they’ve had some injuries that have hurt them."
"We knew if we could keep everybody healthy, we were going to have a fighter’s chance to be decent. I thought, maybe, we could go 6-4 or 7-3 if we really played well," Southern coach Shaun Bonds said. "We got one of our key people hurt in the jamboree and we just kind of went downhill from there. It snowballed on us. Tonight was a culmination of bad things that have happened to us all year."
Jacob Rose led the Southern Academy ground game with 72 yards on 17 carries.
Huckabee paced Marengo Academy with 190 yards on 17 carries.
Marengo Academy will host Abbeville Christian next Friday night in the first round of the AISA Class A playoffs.
