West Alabama Heroes: Sunseri, Williams help pummel MSU

TUSCALOOSA – Here is how some former Tuscaloosa-area high school athletes now competing at the collegiate level fared last week:

Football

Alabama freshman defensive lineman Darren Lake (Sumter Central High School) recorded one tackle in the Crimson Tide’s win over Mississippi State on Saturday night in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama sophomore defensive back Vinnie Sunseri (Northridge High School) started at safety and was the Crimson Tide’s leading tackler with eight total stops (seven solo tackles) in the 38-7 win over previously undefeated Mississippi State on Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. For his efforts, Sunseri was named one of the UA coaching staff’s players of the week following the MSU game.

Alabama senior tight end Michael Williams (Pickens County High School) was the Crimson Tide’s leading receiver with nine catches for 38 yards and one touchdown in the 31-point win over Mississippi State last Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium. He caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from A.J. McCarron to give UA a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.

Alabama State junior linebacker Maurice Tate (Linden High School) recorded three tackles and one quarterback pressure in the Hornets 31-13 win over in-state rival Alabama A&M in the 71st annual Magic City Classic on Saturday at Birmingham’s Legion Field.

Alcorn State senior defensive tackle John Hughes (Northridge High School) had four tackles in two games this season for the Braves.

Benedict freshman linebacker LaMarcus Hudson (Sumter Central High School) had another solid performance on the defensive line with six tackles, two tackles for loss (-11 yards), one sack (-10 yards) and one forced fumble in the 24-13 loss to Albany State on Saturday in the annual Augusta Capitol City Classic.

Benedict freshman linebacker Kelvin McCollum (Sumter Central High School) had another stellar game for the Tigers with a season-high 10 tackles in the 24-13 loss to Albany State in the annual Augusta Capitol City Classic on Saturday.

Benedict freshman linebacker Charles Powell (Sumter Central High School) had his best game of the season in the loss to Albany State on Saturday. Powell recorded a game-high 11 tackles, two tackles for loss (-7 yards), one sack (-5 yards) and one forced fumble in the loss to Albany State. He was named the Most Valuable Player in the annual Augusta Capitol City Classic.

Chattanooga sophomore defensive lineman Toyvain Brand (Hillcrest High School) recorded a season-high seven tackles in the Mocs 39-31 triple-overtime loss to Georgia Southern on Saturday. Brand, who started at defensive tackle, also added one tackle for loss (-1 yard) against the Eagles.

Coffeyville (Kansas) Community College freshman cornerback Jamarcus Howard (Northridge high School) is coming off his best game of the season with seven tackles, two interceptions (17 return yards) and one tackle for loss (-1 yard) in the Ravens 54-47 win at Garden City (Kansas) Community College on Saturday. Howard has 32 tackles and three interceptions in four games for Coffeyville this season.

Delta State offensive lineman Andre Lucious (Tuscaloosa County High School) started at left guard in the Statesmen’s 37-7 Homecoming loss to West Alabama this past Saturday.

East Central Community College sophomore receiver Brock Hall (Paul W. Bryant High School) accounted for 97 total yards in the Warriors 41-0 loss to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College last week.  ECC wrapped up its regular season with a 3-6 record, including a 2-4 mark in MACJC play. He completed 7-of-19 passes for 75 yards and ran 11 times for 22 yards in the loss.

East Central Community College defensive tackle Martaze Jackson (Demopolis High School) saw action in the Warriors regular-season finale against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College last week.

East Central Community College offensive lineman Remund Jackson (Tuscaloosa County High School) saw action in the Warriors regular-season finale against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College last week.

East Central Community College offensive lineman Paul Kirkman (Tuscaloosa County High School) saw action in the Warriors regular-season finale against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College last week.

East Central Community College defensive lineman Vodrick Lucious (Tuscaloosa County High School) saw action in the Warriors regular-season finale against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College last week.

Faulkner College freshman running back De’Marko Hall (Pickens County High School) had one kickoff return for 11 yards in the Eagles 35-0 loss to Belhaven last Saturday.

Iowa Wesleyan College freshman offensive lineman Ja’Korey Walker (Fayette County High School) earned his eighth start of the season in the Tigers 39-28 loss to Olivet Nazarene University on Saturday. The Tigers had 368 yards of offense, including 318 yards and four touchdowns through the air in the loss.

Jackson State senior defensive lineman Jamal Carter (Livingston High School) has recorded 13 tackles, three tackles for loss, recovered two fumbles and forced one fumble in eight games for the Tigers this season. Jackson State (4-4, 4-2 SWAC) has won four of its last six games and is in a first-place tie with Alabama A&M and Alabama State in the Eastern Division.

Jackson State sophomore offensive lineman Danny Williams (Tuscaloosa County High School) has started six games at left tackle this season for the Tigers. JSU had an open date last weekend and returns to action this Saturday against at Grambling.

Jacksonville State sophomore offensive lineman Max Holcombe (Hillcrest High School) started at center for the eighth time this year in the Gamecocks 38-35 win over Murray State to give head coach Jack Crowe his 100th career win at the school. The JSU offense rolled up 444 yards en route to their fourth win in the last five games.

Jacksonville State sophomore running back DaMarcus James (Demopolis High School) missed his second straight game with an injury.  James was injured in the loss to Eastern Illinois on Oct. 13. In six games, he has rushed for 56 yards and five touchdowns. He is averaging a team-best 93.3 yards per game.

Lane College freshman outside linebacker Gerald Gaines, Jr. (Greene County High School) recorded one tackle in the Dragons 28-14 win at Kentucky State this past Saturday.

Miles College defensive lineman James Gaines III (Greene County High School) started at right defensive end and recorded five tackles and one sack (-5 yards) in the 49-13 win over Stillman last week.

Miles College sophomore offensive linemen Aderius Hood (Greene County High School) was the starting left tackle in the Bears 49-13 win over Stillman.

Miles College senior offensive linemen Lester Jackson, Jr., (Central High School) started at right guard in the Bears 49-13 win over Stillman.

Miles College senior fullback K.C. Logan (Central High School) averaged 12 yards per carry in the Golden Bears 49-13 win over Stillman.  Logan had six rushing attempts for 72 yards.  He also caught one pass for 14 yards in the win over the Tigers.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College freshman nose tackle Damien Green (Greene County High School) recorded one tackle in the 41-0 win over East Central Community College last week.

Mississippi State receiver Malcolm Johnson (Northridge High School) had a 13-yard reception in the Bulldogs 38-7 loss at No. 1 ranked Alabama this past Saturday night in Tuscaloosa.

North Alabama freshman quarterback Luke Wingo (Hillcrest High School) will lead the Lions against Tarleton State this Saturday at Braly Municipal Stadium in Florence. UNA (5-3) had an open date last weekend and needs a win this week to keep its playoff hopes alive. Wingo, who took over as the starting quarterback against West Georgia, has completed 41-of-78 passes (52.6 percent) for 625 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. On the ground, he has 59 rushing attempts for 198 yards and five touchdowns.

North Alabama freshman wide receiver Markeldon Washington (Tuscaloosa County High School) has played in all eight games this season and has recorded three catches for 32 yards, with a season-long 24-yard catch against Texas A&M-Kingsville.

South Alabama junior running back Ellis Hill (Hillcrest High School) saw action on special teams in the Jaguars 38-24 loss to ULM last Saturday at Malone Stadium in Monroe, La.

South Alabama junior wide receiver Jared Palmer (Northridge High School) saw action in the wide receiver rotation and on special teams in the Jaguars 38-24 loss to ULM.

South Alabama junior wide receiver Corey Waldon (Central High School) had a 9-yard reception in the loss to ULM last Saturday in Monroe, La.

Stillman freshman defensive back Hudson Cain (American Christian Academy) saw action at safety and played on special teams’ in the Tigers 49-13 loss at Miles College last week.

Stillman sophomore receiver Raymond Coats (Paul W. Bryant High School) saw action in the receiver rotation but did not have a reception in the Tigers loss at Miles College.

Stillman junior offensive lineman Charles Hope (Bibb County High School) was the starting left guard in the Tigers 49-13 loss at Miles College last week.

Stillman junior offensive lineman Derrick Miles (American Christian Academy) started at right tackle in the Tigers 49-13 loss at Miles College last week.

Stillman freshman defensive lineman Kevon Rembert (Linden High School) had three tackles and one sack (-5 yards) in the Tigers 49-13 loss at Miles College last week.

Tennessee-Martin senior defensive lineman Darrin Nalls (Fayette County High School) has recorded 16 tackles, two tackles for loss (-3 yards), one forced fumble and one quarterback pressure in eight games this season. The Skyhawks (6-3) are coming off an open date last Saturday. UT-Martin will put its three-game winning streak on the line this Saturday against with a home game against Jacksonville State.

Tuskegee sophomore wide receiver Larry Cobb (Demopolis High School) was the Golden Tigers leading receiver with three catches for 42 yards in the 14-0 win over Clark-Atlanta last Saturday.

Tuskegee sophomore linebacker El Malik Chinn (Tuscaloosa County High School) recorded a game high eight tackles, including one tackle for loss (-1 yard) as the Golden Tigers recorded their third straight shutout with a 14-0 win over Clark-Atlanta last Saturday. Tuskegee ranks in the Top 10 nationally in scoring defense, total defense, pass defense and pass efficiency defense this season. Tuskegee is second nationally in scoring defense (9.75 points per game) behind Indiana (Pa.), who has allowed only 8.67 points per game.

UAB senior linebacker Greg Irvin (Demopolis High School) started at JACK linebacker in the 55-45 loss at Tulane. He recorded four tackles.

UAB senior cornerback Cornelius Richards (Tuscaloosa County High School) recorded two tackles in the Blazers loss at Tulane last Saturday.

Vanderbilt senior running back Zac Stacy (Bibb County High School) saw limited action in the Commodores 49-7 blowout win over UMass last Saturday in Nashville. Stacy had five rushing attempts for 15 yards and caught one pass for 9 yards in the game.

West Alabama linebacker Ben Brooks (Sumter County High School) recorded four tackles in the Tigers 37-7 win at Delta State this past Saturday.

Western Kentucky junior linebacker Chuck Franks (Fayette County High School) saw action as backup linebacker in the Hilltoppers 14-6 win at Florida International this past Saturday.

Cross Country

Alabama freshman distance runner Analisa Patrick (American Christian Academy) posted a time of 22:24.97 at the 2012 SEC Cross Country Championships last weekend in Nashville.

Volleyball

Stillman freshman setter and outside hitter Hannah Burr (American Christian Academy) recorded two digs and one kill as the Tigers swept Tuskegee last week in Tuscaloosa, winning 25-9, 25-11 and 25-10.
