TUSCALOOSA | Maybe Jaevon Walton was the missing element the Tuscaloosa Academy Knights needed to make history.
The 6-foot, 225-pound Walton joined the team for his junior season and gave the Knights a bullish fullback and starting linebacker. He led the team in rushing, and the Knights won their first AISA Class AAA championship.
Tuscaloosa Academy completed a 13-0 season and took the title by beating Lee-Scott Academy 27-26 on Nov. 17.
Walton, who ran for two touchdowns in the championship game, is The Tuscaloosa News West Alabama Player of the Year. Walton was also a first-team All-State selection, and his coach, Robert Johnson, was voted the AISA Coach of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.
"They had good coaches before I got there, but we just had this group (of players) coming through," Johnson said. "Hats off to these players and parents for believing in me and the administration for hiring me and all of us putting it together."
Unranked in the preseason poll, Tuscaloosa Academy traveled to open the season and beat Lee-Scott Academy 34-0 in Auburn. Walton set the tone as he gained 102 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns. He finished with 1,621 yards on 173 carries, an average of 9.4 yards per attempt. He scored 29 touchdowns and accounted for 176 points. He caught only two passes, but one went for 70 yards to set up his final touchdown run in the championship game.
Walton's defensive numbers included 55 solo tackles, 32 assists, four fumbles caused and four passes broken up. He had nine tackles for loss and three sacks. In the title game, he had 10 tackles and one sack. He forced a fumble with the sack, and teammate Terrell Bush scored on the return. During Lee-Scott Academy's final possession, Walton tipped a pass that was intercepted by J.D. Diaz.
"He was the best offensive player and the best defensive player in the AISA," Johnson said of Walton. "He was also an incredible leader and hard worker.
"Jaevon played in all 13 games, but he played no or minimal time in the second half of nine of those games. In two games he hardly played in the first half. It really puts his stats into perspective when you realize that he actually played about eight full games."
Bush made the AISA All-State first team as an offensive lineman along with Sumter Academy's Cody Rogers. Tuscaloosa Academy's Clay Thomas was chosen as an athlete on defense, and Southern Academy's Cole Marsh was picked as the punter.
Fayette County wide receiver JaTevin Madison was a first-team selection in Class 3A along with teammate Marcellus Redmond, a quarterback and defensive back who was picked as a defensive athlete. Fayette County reached the AHSAA Class 3A title game before losing to Madison Academy.
Other first-team selections from West Alabama were Greensboro's JaBaris Davis and JeVontey Smith and Northside's Zarrian Grant in Class 3A; and in Class 1A Pickens County's Jermacus Brown, Zev Finch and Terrien Steele, Berry's J.C. Finch and Clancy Brown, Hubbertville's Aaron Dillard and Taylor Oden, Linden's Anthony Robinson and Holy Spirit punter Jake Smith.
